Having begun teaching the piano at the age of 17, I quickly enrolled in a one-year training course with The Piano Teachers’ Course UK during a gap year. Several years later, my private practice has built up to over 40 students, and I now manage the organisation that provided me with the excellent training and foundations of my teaching career.
I teach all levels, from complete beginner to post-Grade 8, and my ultimate goal with pupils is to help them eventually become independent musicians with a deep understanding and appreciation of how to play and interpret music at the piano.
As well as learning at the piano, we will also spend time in lessons developing musicianship, aural and sight-reading skills, and learning music theory – and importantly, learning how these all relate to the piano music we play.
Some students want to work towards exams, others prefer not to. However, it is a myth that progress can only be measured by exams! They can be a useful motivator and benchmark, and are part of the learning process for those who want to pursue them but do not provide a whole education. I encourage my students to perform in concerts, regardless, and will organise at least one student concert per year.
No two pupils are taught the same and I dedicate a lot of thought to the resources and music that will build up their strengths and encourage them to work on their weaknesses, as well as inspire and motivate them to practise and learn.
