Arion Orchestra, Douai Abbey,
Saturday 9 March 2013 at 7.45pm,
with star soloist
DAME EVELYN GLENNIE

The Arion Orchestra's annual concert at Douai Abbey, Upper Woolhampton,
near Reading, will take place on Saturday 9 March 2013 at 7.45pm, when the soloist will be the world renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. Since she came to prominence in her youth she has established herself as a star performer all over the world, and again recently came to prominence in a new arena, performing at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

With the orchestra she will play two concertos, one by Vivaldi, his piccolo concerto which she has arranged for vibraphone and orchestra, the other an exciting South American marimba concerto by Ney Rosauro.

In between, the orchestra contributes two works that between them will create the right mood to move us from the Baroque character of Vivaldi to the exotic of Rosauro. These works are "Les Plaisirs" by Francois Dompierre and a Spanish Dance from "The Gadfly" by Shostaskovich. The orchestra begins the programme, out of the lofty silence of the Abbey, with Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis", and the concert ends with an exciting rush of blood in the orchestral version of Mendelssohn's youthful and exuberant Octet for strings.

Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 makes an explosive start to the programme, and is followed by an elegant and spirited oboe concerto by Cimarosa. Atmosphere and temperature change to Scandinavia with two characteristic pieces by Sibelius, and then return to the English melody and wit of Malcolm Arnold's oboe concerto. The second half features the warmth, excitement and overwhelming sonority of Brahms' 1st Sextet arranged for string orchestra by Brien Stait.
